Code Enforcement Services
The Village of Darien has established minimum property maintenance standards to protect the public health, safety, and welfare of residents in the Village, as outlined in Chapter 15 of the Village of Darien Municipal Code. The Village has hired experienced Code Enforcement Officer Shannon Markley to enforce these ordinances.
On November 15, 2021, the Darien Village Board of Trustees adopted Ordinance No. 316 amending Section 12.24.010 of the Village of Darien Municipal Code relating to Snow and Ice Removal on Sidewalks. The amendment increases the forfeiture amount for failure to remove snow and ice on Village sidewalks. The first offense will increase to $100 plus cost of removal, the second offense will increase to $150 plus cost and the third offense will increase to $200 plus cost.
Property Maintenance and Landlord Licensing
The Village of Darien recognizes the need for an organized inspection program of residential rental units within the Village in order to maintain, meet, and comply with all the provisions of the Village of Darien Municipal Code with respect to property maintenance. The Village also desires to provide an efficient system for compelling both absentee and local landlords to correct violations and to maintain rental property in proper condition. Landlord licensing and inspections are required for all multifamily dwellings in the Village. A multifamily dwelling is defined as a building or portion thereof containing two or more residential rental units. Please find the Landlord Licensing Registration form below.
Weeds and Tall Grass
All weeds and grass shall be cut to a height not to exceed one foot. After notice, the Village may cause all weeds, grass, and brush to be cut and removed with the cost thereof to be charged back to the property owner (Village of Darien Municipal Code 8.24.030(F)).
Snow and Ice Removal
The owner or occupant of any lot or parcel shall promptly each day remove all snow and ice which has fallen or accumulated upon the sidewalk in front of such lot or parcel.
